Top Ten Finishes for Karrle and Kiniry in Quebec
CMRC Motocross - Ste-Julie, QC
Although he nailed down an impressive second place finish in the first MX1 moto of Round 6 of the Canadian Motocross Nationals in Ste-Julie, Quebec on Sunday, the second moto proved to be a hard luck story for Team Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/Troy Lee Designs/Two Wheel Suzuki's Bobby Kiniry.
What started out as an excellent day for Kiniry ended up on a disappointing note, when his shifter broke during the hot lap for the second moto. While the rest of the riders gated for the moto Kiniry rushed back to the paddock, where his mechanic quickly replaced the shifter.
Kiniry, who had not intention of watching the race from the sidelines, got back on his bike and joined the fray one lap down. Even though he didn't have a prayer to finish in the points, he rode as if it were any other race and eventually finished 32nd.
"This was our first mechanical issue of the season, something you hope will never happen, but the odds are that it will. You just gotta roll with the punches," said Kiniry.
"Grabbing a second place finish in the first moto made up for it and I got some good points out of that, which keeps me in the title hunt."
In the first moto, Kiniry got off to a top-five start. By the end of the first lap he was in second place behind Dusty Klatt. Klatt had taken over the lead from his teammate Colton Facciotti, who crashed hard some four turns into the moto. Facciotti's day was effectively over.
While the action for a top-five finish was fast and furious on the hard-pack Circuit de Ste-Julie track, Kiniry fended off any challenges successfully keeping his second place to the checkered flag.
Meanwhile, Kiniry's teammate Freddy Karrle, who got a top-10 start, clawed his way into a fifth place finish by the end of the moto.
In the second moto, Karrle got another top-10 start making his way all the way up to third. Towards the end of the moto he started fading a bit finishing seventh.
Coupled with his fifth place in moto one, he garnered sixth overall on the day.
Despite finishing outside of the points in the second moto, Kiniry still managed to collect ninth overall, giving the team two top-10 finishes on the day.
After six of nine rounds, Kiniry still holds down second place in the points chase while Karrle currently sits in eighth.
In the first round of the eastern leg of the Women's Nationals, Heidi Cooke nailed the holeshot in both motos. The defending champ's main rival, '08 National Champion Jacqueline Ross, managed to wrest the lead away from Cooke in both motos, which presented Cooke second overall on the day.
"Considering the problem we had with Bobby's shifter just before the start of the second moto things turned out not too badly for us. With all our riders placing in the top-ten, top-three for Heidi actually, we need to look at this as a good day. It could have been better, but it could have been a lot worse. Like always everybody on the team worked their fingers to the bone. You can't ask for anything more than that," said team owner Andre Laurin.
Team Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/Troy Lee Designs/Two Wheel Suzuki would like to congratulate Heidi on her second overall and Bobby and Freddy for placing in the top ten. And a special 'thank you' goes out to all our valuable sponsors.
