BUCHANAN, MICH. (July 1, 2017) – In front of an impressive crowd at historical RedBud MX, Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Alex Martin raced back onto the podium in front of thousands of fans in Michigan. His 3-3 moto score earned him the runner-up position. Teammate Shane McElrath collected his third top-10 finish of the season as his 9-9 result was good enough for eighth overall. Cantrell had some bad luck in both motos but still earned points on the day, finishing 16-21 for 19th overall
The first moto of the day was uneventful but solid, as Martin started third and finished in the same spot. The racing was intense and he only finished six seconds behind the winner. When the gate dropped for Moto 2, he was in great position to take over the lead when the holeshot earner went down in the first turn. He led for the first 10 laps before washing out the front end in a tricky sand section. Martin remounted quickly but regrouped in third. He gave it all he had in the final six laps, finishing just 1.9 seconds back of the winner.
“The goal was to come in and make sure we didn’t lose any more points and I just made a rookie mistake that cost me a few,” said Martin. “Thankfully we still have a lot of racing to go at a lot of tracks I really love so I think we’re still in good shape to be there at the end.”
McElrath has come into his own, producing well-raced motos and earning top 10 finishes. His third top-10 result of the season came on 9-9 finishes. Both motos McElrath earned top-10 starts and avoided mistakes that helped him finish with another solid overall result.
“I have felt really good the past two races,” said McElrath. “My races were pretty uneventful, which sometimes is harder to race because you really have to focus on riding hard and hitting the right lines. We’ll see how Southwick goes.”
Cantrell’s start to Moto 1 was good until he tipped over on the first lap and went back to 24
th. He used all 30 minutes and two laps to make it up into the points in 16
th. With much of his energy exerted in Moto 1, Cantrell had a tough Moto 2 where he finished 21
st. His 16-21 added up for 19
th overall.
The team will head to its first stop in the Northeast at The Wick 338 in Southwick, Massachusetts on July 8th.
The team started their day in some red, white and blue with the
