GLENDALE, ARIZ. (January 27, 2018) – Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Shane McElrath was leading laps and battling at the front of the pack inside University of Phoenix Stadium, coming up with his third podium finish of the season in second. McElrath has finished no worse than fourth-place this season and sits just one point off the points lead heading into the halfway point of the season next weekend.
The night started out right with McElrath earning his third heat race win of the season. Knowing that the track was going to be fast and hard to pass, McElrath focused on getting a good start in the main event and was able to pull off second into the first turn. He quickly moved into the lead where he held off pressure for several laps before having to check up to avoid a crash, dropping him into second. McElrath maintained a good pace and was smart on the slick track, eventually finishing only three seconds behind the winner.
“The track was really slippery and fast, making it challenging to find spots to gain time,” said McElrath. “It was hard to push while trying to minimize mistakes. I had a lot of fun battling with these guys up front. We are learning every week and will come back even stronger next week.”
For the third time this year, the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge riders showcased their young talent for the Arizona fans. When it was all said and done Colton Waites came out on top, with Ryder Demichele and Jace Stott - who came from fourth - joining Waites on the podium.
McElrath was looking sharp all day and night in the all-new SE Air Jersey Metric Red and SE Air Pant Metric Red. The gear was accompanied by the SE4 Metric Helmet.
