Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Martin Moves Back Into Second In Championship Standings
BLOUNTVILLE, TENN. (June 24, 2017) – Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Alex Martin moved back into second overall in the championship standings after another solid fifth overall finish at Muddy Creek Raceway. What was expected to be a full mud race turned out to be a hot and humid day of racing in the Tri-Cities area. The home race for Shane McElrath went well as he logged in his best finish of the season in seventh. Sean Cantrell had a great opening moto where he finished in seventh, but a crash in Moto 2 forced him to retire early.
Martin continued his run with the front pack as he grabbed good starts in both motos. He kept consistent pace and was able to hold on for a 4-4 moto result. With the points being so close for the front five, his 4-4 pushed him back to fifth overall.
“I’ve been glad to have the consistency throughout the season,” said Martin. “If something happens to the leader in the championship, I know we can be right there. It would be nice to get better overall finishes with my moto scores, but the class is so competitive and the points are close.”
For the North Carolinian, McElrath always enjoys hosting his family and friends at the race in Tennessee. The local support gave him an extra boost, helping McElrath post his best overall result this season. His sixth place result in Moto 1 was the best moto finish of the season after getting a great start with the front runners. In Moto 2, his start was just outside the top 10 and was able to finish 11th for seventh overall.
“It’s such a good feeling coming to this track where I spent a lot of time in my early years,” said McElrath. “My first moto start was really good and helped me push hard in those opening laps. I wish I would have been able to duplicate it in Moto 2, but I’m happy to get my best finish of the season and hopefully we can build on it.”
The day started well for Cantrell who got a great start with his teammates in Moto 1. He kept pace and was able to collect his best moto finish of his rookie season. In Moto 2, Cantrell was trying to get into good position, but when he came around on Lap 2 went down and was unable to continue. His 7-38 moto score collected him 14th overall.
The team will celebrate Fourth of July weekend at the annual stop in Buchanan, Michigan at Red Bud on July 1.
